GOREGAONHOUSE

Freelance Project for the Interiors of a 2 BHK

Mumbai is known as the ‘City of Dreams’, a city where culture, customs and lifestyles blend together effortlessly. However, there are always two sides to a coin, and Mumbai is equally infamous for its tiny homes and lack of open spaces. This became the primary challenge in my first freelance project - to make the Goregaon home feel more spacious and luxe than it is. The initial concept for the two-bedroom home focused on adding to the space without making significant civil or structural changes. In addition to this maximising natural this maximising natural illumination was a top priority. Further, the client leads a life of many facets and wanted his home to reflect the same with regards to the multifunctionality of spaces. These factors then became the common thread woven through each of the spaces within the home. The dining and living spaces were designed to feel like different spaces that can be changed up depending on factors like the time of day, the number of people or even just the individuals’ mood. No matter which configuration you choose though, it is permeated by a lightness of material juxtaposed with tactile richness. This play of textures using natural materials like cane also continues to the Master bedroom which is the epitome of coziness with a touch of functionality.

The idea of the house was to try to make it as functional as possible but at the same time make the client feel like he is living in an expansive space. Space being the biggest constraint in Mumbai houses set the tone for the ideas, concepts, color palettes and design decisions in the concept planning of this project. On the right side is the transition of how the dining room wall can be transformed from a plain design element into 5 functional spaces. These spaces include 2 storage wardrobes, one with a temple, a dining table with chairs that can be folded and stored in the cabinet below and an informal seating space that provides the best view in front of it.

economy of space

The drawing (normal) shows a standard dining room layout. However the one below shows how the same space can be used in multiple ways by making the design more dynamic

lightness of material

The one aspect that was focused on was the usage of light materials to enhance the feel and the size of the space. More whites, beiges and inserts of green wherever possible to make it look as earthy as we can.

textures and tactility

Cane as a material was chosen as a consistent theme throughout the house because of its range of textures and the antique look it gets to a particular space
